Divorce
Loss of marriage, future?
Illness
Loss of control, uncontrollable, am I dying?
Loss of job
Unpredictability, uncertainty, new routines

Hazards and trauma (Sudden, massive and overwhelming situations/threats) :
Accidents
War
assault
Rape
Natural disasters

Gradual accumulation of the "straw that breaks the camel's back" (not attributable to a specific event)
Stress and prolonged strain

How do we react to a crisis?
Example a car accident "The feeling was completely unreal, it was like I was watching a movie or dreaming - is this happening to me or?"

The response is built into the body's mechanisms. As an immediate response to trauma, the body produces chemicals that are natural painkillers and sedatives. It is a form of anesthesia. The body protects us physically and psychologically from the effects of overwhelming pain or anxiety

The body provides us with a kind of distance so that we can react in the best possible way

It's a way to buy time - but this emotional numbing is only temporary - before feelings and problems come flooding in. In this situation, you may need help to process and release these feelings.
